Alesis released their new AmpDock yesterday at NAMM 2012, we got to get a first hand look at its features and specs. The AmpDock supports both the iPad and iPad 2, so we're assuming it will work with the iPad 3 when that is released too as it looks like their's quite a bit of play in the mounting area for variations in design.

Alesis released their new AmpDock yesterday at NAMM 2012, we got to get a first hand look at its features and specs. The AmpDock supports both the iPad and iPad 2, so we’re assuming it will work with the iPad 3 when that is released too as it looks like their’s quite a bit of play in the mounting area for variations in design.

Although it looks a little cheap with the plastic foot pedal and plastic knobs, the ability to turn into any amplifier simply by loading up an app in your iPad is quite special. Expect it July or late Q2 for $300.

Connecting your professional audio and studio equipment to a much smaller, consumer-oriented device like the Apple iPad doesn’t have to be a complicated process. Alesis has stepped into this arena with the announcement of its iO Dock, aiming to find that bridge between the audio apps on the tablet and the audio equipment in your recording studio.

There are so many apps for the iPad that are geared toward music creation, recording, and production, but the iPad itself isn’t exactly geared to use the right equipment. That’s why the iO Dock is so useful. It comes with two balanced combination XLR/0.25-inch jack inputs for your microphones and other instruments, each with its own gain control and switchable phantom power for condenser mics. There’s also an onboard MIDI (DIN) port for drum machines and synths.

Other highlights include the USB port, balanced 0.25-inch outputs, RCA composite video out, an assignable footswitch input, and a direct monitor switch. This certainly sounds more robust than the iRig and iRig Mic I saw earlier this year. The MSRP for the iO Dock is $399, but the expected street price is closer to $200.

Fellow buskers: Would you pay $70 to be able to record your music with the same sound and body available to electric-wielders? If so, Alesis AcousticLink might what you’re looking for. With a clamp-on acoustic pickup, Cubase LE software and integration with GarageBand, Protools or Studio One, Alesis’ new acoustic recording equipment also eliminates the need for costly and troublesome mic-ing trials. The company claims their digital recording solution retains all of the body and resonance of an acoustic guitar for CD-quality recording, capable of interacting fully with effects at the post- or production-level, rather than at the pedal stages like some electric guitarists prefer.

The full digital acoustic interface is presumed to cost about $70 at its release, though Alesis hasn’t confirmed that price yet.
