What you see above is a laser beam striking and tracking a point at the front of a rocket to destroy it mid-flight. The beam is from Lockheed Martin’s newly developed ADAM high energy laser (HEL) system which is taking out that rocket from a range of 1.5 km, as you will see in the video below.

The rocket is completely destroyed as you can see in the image:

ADAM or Area Defense Anti-Munitions is a system capable of nullifying attacks from unmanned aerial vehicles or rocket attacks from the ground. It can track short-range target from a distance of 5 km to destroy it when it’s in a range of up to 2 km. It could be very useful for protecting assets like military bases near the battlefield.

The video shows an ADAM prototype destroying a “Qassam-like” rocket. You will be able to clearly see the laser striking and tracking the rocket to eventually take it out.

It’s, of course, being developed to protect humans and military stuff from missiles, but why should they fire a rocket in the first place. It’s sad to remember that this will deal mostly with war. Why don’t they develop and keep this tech for some good use in the future, like helping NASA and Harry Stamper to take care of an extra-terrestrial threat.

An early Ice Cream Sandwich port was demoed for Notion Ink Adam, a 10.1 Tegra 2 based Indian tablet that recently started to cooperate with Tabletroms. The tabletroms forum is an active community of developers that have continued the development of firmware for this one year old tablet.

Although the Notion Ink Adam has largely been forgotten, it still had some unique features such as an optional Pixel Qi transflective screen that keeps working under strong light with e-ink type rendering, and a swivel camera.

Prospects of an official port of Ice Cream Sandwich — apart from what can be found in ICS Android Open Source Project repositories — for Notion Ink device are unclear. Then, in general, Tegra 2 based slates are not the first choice for Google’s ICS developers, to put it mildly.

The demo shows lagginess, glitches, and not much else. Of course, the port might constitute just a very early alpha, and glitches in UI graphics might be removed soon enough. New ports of Ice Cream Sandwich pop up every day this season, so there’s always hope.

The Android tablet market is set to explode in the next few months, thanks to the pending onslaught of Honeycomb tabs on the way, but the Notion Ink Adam is still getting a lot of attention. You can probably thank the Pixel Qi display for at least a part of that.

But, how well does it actually perform? How is that Tegra2 processor holding up? Has Notion Ink fixed up some of the quirks that plagued earlier builds of the tablet? Well, Greg of NotionInkFan has posted several video walkthroughs with the device. He looks at Flash updates, UI concerns, GPS bugs, and all sorts of other things that you might want to know.

In addition to the two vids by Greg, there are two additional videos from other people in the Notion Ink community. What do you think? Will you choose Adam over, say, the $800 Motorola XOOM?

Are you ready? Just as the iPhone paved the way for so many other touchscreen smartphones, it seems that the floodgates are opening for all sorts of Apple iPad alternatives. One of the latest to enter the arena is the Adam Tablet from Notion Ink. On paper, this device sure sounds appealing, but how is it in the real world?

To be powered by the Google Android operating system, the Notion Ink Adam is said to have twice the battery life of the iPad. Not only that, but it will also support Flash content and it’ll output full HD video at 1080p as well (iPad does 576p). Notion Ink CEO also makes mention of the Nvidia chip and Pixel Qi screen.

The people at Notion Ink have gone through several possible designs for the Adam too. It started out with silver-edging and then it got a rolled plastic edge at CES. The most recent rumors say that there will be two different models, measuring 12.9mm and 11.6mm thick, which could indicate different sized displays too.

Notion Ink also recognizes that one of the biggest appeals to the iPad will be the apps being developed for it. To address this, the company is hosting a $1 million app competition, encourage developers to create goodies for the Adam too.

Price? Release date? Those are still up in the air, but we all remember what happened when Adam decided to eat that apple, right?
