Siri functionality has gained enormous popularity since day one of its appearance on the iPhone 4s. For “some reason”, the Siri service is not officially available for the owners of original iPhone 4.

Whatever the reasoning behind Apple creating this limitation is besides the point here, a hacker named f3v3r has compiled a detailed tutorial of how a user of an iPhone 4 can make it Siri compliant.

First, it takes setting up a Siri proxy server, detailed instructions are shown in the video above which entail setting up an parallel installation of Ubuntu.

Then, Siri proxy plugins can be installed. A sample with a plugin for IMDB (Internet Movie Data Base) is detailed here.

Additionally, one may want to download, setup and install Spire Siri port on iPod, iPhone, and iPad.

Of course, all these mods are quite demanding in respect to the skills required of many terminal commands. Reports showing that available proxy servers might be severely overloaded, setting up one’s own proxy server might be a tedious task. Then, this mod is still tied to iPhone 4s, or to its authentication keys, to be more exact: if you don’t have a 4S, you need the auth tokens from it. However, it’s not as easy as borrowing them from a friend. They expire daily. Which means you get at most a day’s worth of use. We have to wait for the untethered A5 jailbreak before this is going to work for us non-4S folks.

Yet the successful mods are reported, the procedures get streamlined, proxy lists are updated, and getting Siri on the iDevices that are not meant for it for whatever reason is becoming a reality for some.

So close. So very close. Last week, we saw a brief update on the status of an iOS 5 untethered jailbreak. Then, we saw a video, but when is it actually going to get released to the masses? While we still don’t have a timeline, we have to realize that pod2g is just one man and he only has so many hours in the day. So, he’s decided to focus his efforts on developing an Apple A5 jailbreak for the iPhone 4s and iPad 2.

This sentiment was expressed on his blog, where he says: “I need to focus on A5 and hope I can find a path quick, and I have the feeling that chronic-dev could help me.” It’s not that he wants the Chronic Dev Team to help him develop the jailbreak for Apple A5 iDevices; it’s that he wants them to take a load off his shoulders by working on the other project.

Pod2g has sent all the details to the Chronic Dev Team “so that they can finish, test, integrate and release the A4 jb ASAP.” That helps to free up his time and mental space to “put all my energy from now on on the A5.” If you have an iPhone 4S or iPad 2, that’s good news for you, or not, because you are still eagerly awaiting the fix. He might even have a treat for you before the end of the year. He’s hoping.

A little friendly competition never hurt anyone. In fact, it’s usually a good thing for consumers and this happens to be true with the jailbreak community too. Both Pod2g from Chronic Dev-team and MuscleNerd from iPhone Dev-team are working hard to provide an untethered jailbreak for iOS5, particularly with A5-powered iDevices. And they’re both getting awfully close.

While there are already two jailbreak solutions out there for iOS 5, but they’re both tethered and neither works with A5 iDevices (iPhone 4S and iPad 2). The untethered jailbreaks from Chronic Dev-team and iPhone Dev-team sound like they’re almost ready though. Pod2g of Chronic Dev-team posted a video link last Friday demonstrating an untethered jailbreak. MuscleNerd from iPhone Dev-team tweeted that the “upcoming redsn0w release makes both TinyUmbrella and Cydia blob saves useful for 5.0+ (1st verifies, then stitches).” The blob allows for the unlock and jailbreak. MuscleNerd seems a little more bent on a way into A5, but it looks like Pod2g want in on that too.

To make matters even better, the newest iPhone software has “wide open main fs,” meaning that it has an “unencrypted ramdisk with the VFDencypt key in plain text.” What does this mean in layman’s terms? “Everybody can decrypt the filesystem with it.” Another in-road. The untethered jailbreak must be right around the corner.
