]]> As with any other year, 2011 saw the release of all sorts of new technologies and gadgets. From more mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras to an onslaught of tablets and e-readers, we saw a lot of it. But what device can be singled out as the most important? According to Gizmodo readers, it’s the 2011 MacBook Air.

The decision was made by the readers who voted on a single-elimination tournament bracket conjured up by the Giz. Other notable entries in this tournament included the Galaxy Nexus, iPad 2, Chevy Volt, Lumia 800, Nintendo 3DS, and even the HP TouchPad. In the grand finals, it was the MacBook Air that narrowly defeated (50.87 percent to 49.13) the Amazon Kindle Fire.

The arguments were fierce and sound for both finalists. The Kindle Fire was able to bring tablet functionality down to a much more reasonable price, offering 95% of the features at a fraction of the cost. The new MacBook Air, however, really fulfilled its earlier promise of giving you real laptop power in an increasingly slim and sleek package. It paved the way for next year’s ultrabook barrage, just as the original iPhone paved the way for the army of touchscreen phones. The MBA certainly wasn’t the first thin and light, but it did push the format to the forefront.

The new year is coming up in a few hours, maybe it’s already past for some of you. But Mobile Magazine is excited to release our top 10 stories of the year because well, you never know what can happen. What was really hot? What caught everyone’s interest? What topped the charts? Well, no need to wonder any longer as we have revealed the top 10 stories of the year 2011.

It’s clear that the Apple iPhone, particularly the iPhone 5, was a hot topic this past year.  As was that ancient Windows Mobile 6.5 for some strange reason.  Most interesting of all was the $99 college note slate.  Don’t we all wish we had that last semester?  Maybe we can in 2012, as with the iPhone 5.

We’re hot on the trail and keeping tabs on all the new technology and gadgets coming out of CES 2011 in Las Vegas. It appears that a major trend (more obvious than not) is the infiltration of tablet computers. 2010 was the year of the iPad, 2011 will indeed be the year of the Android tablet. Android is clearly making a large entrance to this market.

One of the most exciting devices we’ve seen come out of CES this year could very well be the MicroVision Mini-Tablet reference design, utilizing the PicoP laser display engine. RCA has also come out with a range of mobile TV devices for the US market. Mobile TV is huge in Europe, and i’m sure now that RCA is in the game it will pick up speed in the US.  Lets also not forget Fujitsu’s S1100, a 1-inch ultra-portable scanner for mobile professionals.  For all our CES news and coverage keep checking back here and our CES tagged posts.
