Have the latest firmware possible for your TouchWiz-based Samsung smartphone? If not, you better get on that right away. If you are wondering why it matters, it is because of a new security flaw found that affects certain Samsung TouchWiz devices such as the Galaxy S2 and S3 with older firmware in place.

The security flaw allows a single line of code in a malicious web page to trigger a factory reset on your device without prompting the user or even giving them a chance to cancel the reset. Beyond resetting your phone, the hack could also be paired with another glitch/hack to render your SIM card totally useless.

Beyond the S2 and S3, devices like the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Beam are also reportedly at risk. Again, most of the issue only seems to affect devices that are severely out of date. This just reaffirms how important it is to keep up with with software and firmware updates on smartphones, tablets and (of course) PCs.

The vulnerability is a result of the way Samsung’s dailer app handles USSD codes and telephone links. The odds of it being used against you might not be the high, but it’s still a risk that should be taken seriously. The vulnerability could also be used for other things besides a factory reset, like pushing through a bunch of numbers that have a premium-rate for dialing- something much more likely for hackers to attempt I’d wager.

What can you do to ensure your TouchWiz device is safe? Updating is probably the first line of defense. Until Samsung confirms that they have fixed this issue on all devices though, using a 3rd party dialer might not be a bad idea either.

The Motorola RAZR M 4G LTE is finally official, though it certainly wasn’t a secretive launch at all. The newly announced device is a pretty decent looking midrange device, though it’s nothing to get all that excited about either.

Next to the RAZR HD, this device isn’t nearly a powerhouse, but it’s still capable enough.

What kind of specs do we get with the RAZR M? The Razr M run on a dual-core Snapdragon S4 and features an 8-megapixel camera, 8GB of internal storage and 1GB of RAM. It also has NFC and a resolution of 960×540. The phone will launch with Android ICS, but a Jelly Bean update is expected to arrive shortly after.

If you aren’t much into having a large bezel around your phone, you may end up loving the RAZR M. The device is nearly edge-to-edge with glass, which means you get a good deal of screen real estate space in a very thin and light package.

The official launch date for the RAZR HD and MAXX HD are yet to be announced, but the RAZR M is coming very soon. Verizon should have the device available starting next week for just $99 with a two year contract.

Interested in the RAZR M? Preorders start today.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 has officially been unveiled at the Berlin Unpacked Event. The newest phablet from Samsung sure brings a lot of great features to the table, but let’s start by taking a look at the hardware and features this thing packs:

1.6GHz quad-core Exynos processor

2GB of RAM

5.5-inch Super AMOLED HD1280 x 720 display

Size: 80 x 151.1 x 9.4mm thin

Weight: 180 grams

16/32/64GB on-board memory

microSDHC support of up to 64GB of additional storage

2-megapixel front cam

8-megapixel rear cam

HSPA+ support

4G LTE connectivity (in selected markets)

Bluetooth 4.0

Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n

Wi-Fi Direct

USB 2.0 support

A-GPS and Glonass support

3,100mAh removable battery

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz

Redesigned S Pen with better grip and rubber tip.

The Galaxy Note 2 rocks some pretty good specs as you can see. The S-Pen has really uped its game this time around, offering S-Pen related tricks that allow things like hoovering over icons in order to to take a peak at email lists and other contents. Worried about leaving your stylus behind? If you try to leave without it, the Note 2 will quickly warn you that they are about to leave the Stylus behind.

The Galaxy Note 2 seems to be a worth successor to the popular Note, that’s for sure. So when is it coming? For now all we know is that it is destined to arrive sometime in October for the European, Asian and Middle Eastern market.

For the North American market though? It’s coming sometime 2012, or so we are hearing, but that’s all we know for sure. Pricing has also yet to be revealed, but considering the OG Note premiered at a $300 price point with two year contract, the Note 2 might take a similar approach.

What do you think of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 2?

The most powerful smartphone sparks everyone’s creative inspirations

BERLIN, Germany—29 August 2012— At the Samsung Mobile Unpacked event held today at IFA, in Berlin, Samsung introduced the GALAXY Note II, a whole new level of innovation for the GALAXY Note category. The new Samsung GALAXY Note II enables unique experiences in personalized and expressive content creation, making it the ultimate smartphone for on-the-go creativity.

“Last year at IFA, we launched the GALAXY Note, which opened a new category of smart mobile devices. This year, again at IFA, I am proud to announce the GALAXY Note II, which will encourage users to ‘unleash their inner creativity.’ With a perfect viewing experience and unique and differentiated features, users can discover information and capture their ideas faster, express thoughts freely and manage tasks more efficiently. For anyone who wants to be creative, expressive and unique, the Samsung GALAXY Note II will be the ideal device, allowing users to live a life extraordinary,” said JK Shin, President of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics.

Since the first introduction of the GALAXY Note category, Samsung has continued to enhance and expand the GALAXY Note product experiences. In May 2012, Samsung introduced ‘Premium Suite,’ a software upgrade which provided enhanced user experiences. With the Ice Cream Sandwich OS upgrade, Samsung offered innovative new features such as Shape Match and Formula Match, providing a new way for organizing and expressing ideas in their personal and professional life. Also in August, Samsung expanded the category further with the GALAXY Note 10.1, which has a 10.1-inch large screen, a Multiscreen feature for the ultimate multitasking, and enhanced features for users’ productivity, creativity and learning abilities. With further enhancements, Samsung GALAXY Note II will help users unleash their inner creativity by letting them discover information faster, capture ideas, and express them in a more organized and efficient manner.

Perfect viewing experience

The GALAXY Note II features a 5.5” (140.9mm) HD Super AMOLED screen, providing breathtaking visuals and crystal clear detail. Its 16:9 screen ratio ensures an immersive and enriched cinema-like video viewing experience, perfect for watching HD videos on-the-go. Its larger screen allows users to see content clearly and vividly, with much enhanced readability. In addition to the stunning content consumption experiences on a larger screen, users will also be able to accomplish more tasks efficiently and create content freely on-the-go, as the GALAXY Note II comes with a thinner and portable body.

Easy multitasking

Air View allows users to hover with the S Pen over an email, S Planner, image gallery, or video to preview the content without having to open it. This feature enables users to quickly search and see more information in one view without screen transitions.

Thanks to the breadth of the GALAXY Note II’s amazing viewing experience, a feature called Popup Note extends the concept of Popup Play, which lets users open an S Note instantly as a pop-up window anywhere on the screen. For example, when a user pulls out the S Pen during a phone call, the S Note application automatically pops up on the screen, allowing users to jot down a quick note.

In addition, the device’s new gesture pad feature, called Quick Command, lets users quickly activate frequently used apps with the S Pen. The command pad appears when a user just swipes upward on the screen with the S Pen button pressed. Users can quickly send an email, make a call, or search a location as they draw pre-registered marks on the command pad or register a unique mark to allow for quick and easy access.

Furthermore, users will be able to share their experiences with others quickly and easily using Screen Recorder. It allows users to record a whole sequence of actions taken on their screen — a demonstration of how to use an application, for example — and then share it with friends for comment, or just for fun.

Amazing expression tools – Advanced S Pen & S Note

The new S Pen is longer, thicker and ergonomically designed for the perfect grip. Therefore, it provides a more precise, comfortable, and natural writing and drawing experience.

The S Pen’s advanced features also provide enhanced capabilities to capture ideas and inspirations instantly, and to combine handwriting with any digital content directly on the screen. By simply pressing the dedicated S Pen button, the S Pen magically recognizes that users want to clip or edit the selected content on the screen. The Easy Clip feature allows users to instantly outline and crop any content on the screen in any shape to save, share or paste. Once done cropping the image, users can freely edit the cropped content through coloring, shading, or their own personal handwriting. It is quick and easy.

Another amazing expression feature called Idea Visualizer allows users to easily add illustrations by handwriting keywords on the S Note. It provides illustration images that match the handwritten keywords. It’s a fancy illustration match function that will allow users to express, organize and visualize ideas in a more innovative and creative way. Users can even customize and add in their own illustrations library.

PowerfulPerformance

Powering content creation, sharing and multitasking capabilities, the GALAXY Note II comes with the latest hardware technologies. A mighty 1.6GHz Quad-Core processor and HSPA Plus or 4G LTE connectivity delivers easy multitasking, lightning-fast screen transitions, powerful browser performance, and minimal app load time. The GALAXY Note II is powered by Android™ 4.1, Jelly Bean. This brings stunning graphical capabilities and an upgraded Google Now service, including new features such as contextual search, to the GALAXY Note II. The memory options are 16 GB, 32 GB, and 64 GB with an expandable micro SD memory slot. Thanks to a 3,100mAh battery, users can enjoy multimedia content, always be productive on the go, and capture ideas whenever, wherever without suffering from power limitation.

The GALAXY Note II comes with an 8 megapixel rear-facing and 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera with HD video recording. The camera has great features like Buddy Photo Share, Burst Shot and Best Photo, which were introduced on the GALAXY S III earlier in the year. In addition to that, the GALAXY Note II features a unique camera function called Best Faces. Best Faces allows users to choose the most preferred face or pose of each person from group portrait photos. Users can also personalize photos by leaving handwritten notes on the backside of a photo using the S Pen. Handwritten Photo Notes can be shared with others in jpg format.

Available in Marble White or Titanium Gray color options, the Samsung GALAXY Note II is set to launch in October starting in major European, Asian, and Middle East markets.

The Samsung GALAXY Note II will be on display at the Samsung booth # 20 at IFA 2012 from Aug 31 through Sep 5. For more information on GALAXY Note II, please visit www.samsungmobilepress.com.

Recently Mobile Mag covered a post about how the Nexus tablet was likely to be unveiled at the Google I/O event, which is now days away. Jumping the gun a bit, supposedly a training document has leaked out revealing what is now believed to be that very tablet. The document calls the device the Nexus 7 with a planned release in July for $200.

According to the document, the Nexus 7 will feature a 7-inch screen (hence the name), a 1.3GHz quad-core Tegra 3, GeForce 12-core GPU, 1GB of RAM and two different storage sizes, 8GB and 16GB. As expected, the document reveals the building partner as Asus. Other interesting bits released in the leak include the use of an IPS display with a 178-degree viewing angle, a 1280×800 resolution, a 1.2MP front-facing camera, a 9 hour battery and NFC that makes use of Google Wallet and Android Beam.

If that doesn’t get you excited, the device will also feature Android Jelly Bean, which is believed to be numbered as version 4.1, and will be the first device to offer the new OS.

The prices sound like they will be $199 for the 8GB model and $249 for the 16GB model. The Nexus 7 sounds really exciting, provided it’s real. For now, take this all with a grain of salt, though more than likely we will know for sure in a few days when the Google I/O event takes place. If the leak does prove real, budget Android devices are in for some pretty stiff competition, and Amazon better have a 2nd-gen Fire in the works if they want to continue to stay relevant in the budget space after this thing hits the market.

After months of speculation and hearsay, the Samsung Galaxy S III was officially unveiled to the world earlier today in London, but which carriers are going to get their hands on this latest slab of Super AMOLED deliciousness? After all, Samsung didn’t make any formal indication at the official event.

As far as American carriers are concerned, it looks like at least T-Mobile and Sprint are getting it, but there’s no official mention or word for Verizon or AT&T yet. The Sprint version will likely be equipped with the ability to use the upcoming 4G LTE network, whereas the T-Mobile version could make use of their HSPA+ network instead. It has been postulated that the T-Mobile version will be the only one with a quad-core chip, since the LTE versions would require either an external 4G LTE modem or a non-Samsung dual core chip with LTE (likely the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4).

Given the history, we’re expecting the LTE version to arrive at all of Canada’s big three (Rogers, Bell, and Telus) some time this summer, which should be the same launch window for T-Mobile and Sprint.

In case you missed it, here’s a rundown of some of the key specs and features: 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED 720p display, Android 4.0 ICS, 8MP rear camera, 1.9MP front camera, S Beam, AllShare Play, AllShare Cast, S Voice, burst shot mode, Smart Stay, Social Tag, Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, 16/32/64GB storage, microSD expansion (up to 64GB) and a 2100mAh battery.

Samsung unveiled some new devices at the MWC 2012, but it is certainly a disappointment that the much anticipated Galaxy S3 did not make it for the event. We are hoping that Samsung would make up for this by bringing out a handset that is worth the wait. And it appears like that is what they are planning to do. The latest info suggests that the company is thinking about something big.

According to these rumors, which come to us courtesy of BGR, Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy S3 will be released in over 50 “markets or cities” simultaneously and will boast a 1.5GHz quad-core Samsung Exynos processor (will be a small surprise if they do not go for a third-party model). That is a much needed addition if the company wants to do well on the market against the newly unveiled monster device from HTC.

The S3 will apparently feature a whopping 4.8 inch “full HD” 1080p resolution display with 16:9 aspect ratio. That means movies will be amazing on the new screen. The S3 will be running Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and will be 4G LTE capable too.

The 8-megapixel rear camera (we wonder what Eldar Murtazin was playing with earlier) will stay the same. There is also a 2-megapixel front-shooter aimed at high resolution video calls. If that back cam doesn’t impress you, check out this one.

And the device’s entire back will be made out of ceramic, which is a pretty interesting choice if these rumors become true.

But, as always, we recommend you taking this with a grain of salt. But there is nothing unbelievable about these rumors, we are digging for more info on the upcoming handset, so stay tuned for updates.

Shazam has just announced that its media discovery app is about to get a whole lot better thanks to its support of the NFC-based Android Beam technology. Now Shazam users will be able to hold their devices back-to-back with their friends to share favorite music, merchant offers and television tags.

This feature will start showing up as part of an update in the next few weeks, but of course will require ICS 4.0 to work. Outside of the beaming ability, Shazam is also going to continue providing one of the fastest tagging systems ever with further enhancements heading to the app when it updates to add Beam support.

In the meantime, feel free to check out the press release below for more information about the newest update to Shazam.

Another significant step that will make the app even faster will be released this week on the Android operating system with iOS to follow in the coming weeks.
The new device is an updated version of Samsung’s Galaxy Beam which was shown off at the Mobile World Congress in 2010. And in case you are pondering, Samsung is not the only company which has dived into the idea of a projector in a phone. Have you heard about the LG eXpo projector phone?

The original Galaxy Beam was only slated for Singapore and it came with Android v2.1, a 3.7-inch screen, and a 9 lumens projector. The updated version runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and features a 4-inch 480×800 TFT display, a 1GHz dual-core processor, 8GB of internal memory (there’s a microSD slot for cards of up to 32GB), a 5MP rear shooter, a 1.3MP front camera and a 2000mAh battery.

That’s no HTC One X, but those who are buying this device will be looking forward to playing with its 15 lumens projector. Although that is not enough to blind anyone, it is more than enough for projecting pictures, videos, and other media onto flat surfaces. And, according to Samsung, it can display images up to 50-inches wide.

Unfortunately, we haven’t got any hints regarding the price tag and availability of the Beam. We will keep you updated. The Beam is expected to be launched in a number of countries.

And yeah, almost forgot. According to the device’s landing page, the handset has 6GB of RAM. That’s most probably a typo, but maybe not, since it could take some serious memory to power a projector.
