Cannonball Run is returning to the States.
The dynamic and daring road rally that is all the rage in Europe will invade America this summer, reinvented as the Great American Run for a week in late July and early August of 2007.
A total of 400 cars, with both drivers and copilots, will take off in one of four cities—Atlanta, Miami, New York, and Washington, D.C. The final 270 miles to the finish line are in Los Angeles. Each car will have to report in at 16 checkpoints along the 3000-mile routes. The first car across the line wins.
If you have a Maserati or Lamborghini or Ferrari, you'll probably want to consider entering, although the event has no real standard for what kind of vehicle. Maybe that old Ford Mustang in the garage can be souped up in time. Oh, you'll have to have US$10,000, too. That covers all of your accommodations, meals, and party fees. (Yes, there will be parties along the way, yet another challenge to your sleeping habits.) Part of the postproduction will be a DVD, featuring film from 40 crews who will be traveling with the drivers all along the way.
Only 100 have signed up so far, and the race starts on July 29.
In case you're wondering, this is not exactly a new event. The movies of the same name borrowed from the story of Erwin G. "Cannonball" Baker, who drove all across the country in 1933 in just 54 hours. The first event was in 1971, and the races continued for a few years until funding and interest waned in the early 1980s.
The European event began in 2002 and has been a regular occurrence since then.
