Mercedes SLC Supercar To Feature Aluminum Construction |

 There are several factors that go into making a fast car and having a powerful engine is just one piece of the puzzle. Mercedes will reportedly tackle another piece -- curb weight -- on their upcoming SLC supercar by building the model out of aluminum. This is a similar strategy to that deployed by the likes of Aston Martin, Audi, Jaguar, and Rolls-Royce. By using aluminum, they can significantly reduce the curb weight of the car, effectively allowing the horses under the hood to be work more efficiently. After all, moving 1000 pounds around is a lot easier than moving 2000.
The same all-aluminum strategy will also be employed for the upcoming SL coupe as well, using an aluminum spaceframe and body panels. This makes the new SL a solid 10-15% lighter than the current model (which weighs between 3,860 and 4,500 pounds, depending on the exact spec and options).
The SLC will only be produced in limited numbers -- only about 3,000 to 4,000 of this hot rides will be made -- and the all-aluminum wonder should become available in 2010, "two years before the new all-aluminum SL debuts."
