US Government backs Apple in war against French anti-DRM law |
|
Several days ago we heard of a proposed law in France that would effectively outlaw DRM, forcing online music store owners to make their content playable on devices other than their own.
This is being purported as an act of anti-piracy, by making legitimate downloads more "useful" and "accessible", so to speak. Of course, Steve Jobs and friends aren't fans of this bill, to say the least, and now it seems that Apple has at least one supporter within the US Government.
US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez has gone on the record that this law would violate intellectual property rights. "We need to speak up," he said. "I would compliment that company because we need for companies to also stand up for their intellectual property rights." Apple calls this law, which has not yet gone through upper house approval, "state-sponsored piracy."
The battle continues. If this bill comes to pass, Apple will either have to open up its DRM (unlikely), or stop selling content via its iTMS in France.
