Samsung Initiates Linux 3G Smartphone Design |

 Several well known manufacturers have joined forces today to announce the world’s first Linux OS UMTS/EDGE smartphone reference design.
The platform will take advantage of the many advanced multimedia services available to users on 3G and UMTS/EDGE networks. Making high quality video calls, video streaming, and playing H.264, MPEG-4, AAC+, MP3 audio and video formats with stereo loudspeakers and 3D sound will be some of the multimedia services capable on the Linux-based platform.
The arrangement is expected to go as follows; Samsung will provide the S3C24A0 application processor, Linux kernel and drivers certified by Montavista, Trolltech's user interface for Linux and application development tools will be used, Infineon's UMTS/EDGE dual-mode protocol stack, Sun's high-performance Java implementation and ARM and Superscape's Swerve 3D rendering engine.
Some applications on the platform will be Emuzed's integrated multimedia application (HipMedia) which allows for recording, playing back and sharing movies, photo albums and music in an intuitive easy to use manner. Opera's browser for Linux mobile devices and QSound Labs' 3D audio and ringtone solutions are also expected to be included.
