Click to ZoomThe Fedex delivery person came by this morning with a pleasant package for me. Tearing open the Fedex branded box, I discovered the Kodak EasyShare M853 digital camera and I couldn't wait to take this compact picture-taker out for a quick test drive.

In terms of raw specs, you get an 8.2 megapixel imaging sensor, 3x optical zoom, a 2.5-inch preview LCD, and ISO up to 1250. It's also notable that this relatively compact camera is capable of recording videos at a full VGA resolution.

My initial impressions are that the Kodak EasyShare M853 is quite well built and comes with a decent feature list, but it's quite a slow camera. When I took a picture -- even when I downgraded the resolution to 5MP -- the camera took about five seconds to write the image to memory. This was the case both when I tried saving to the 16MB of internal flash memory and when I tried storing the image to an SD card.

Expect a more complete review soon.

UPDATE (8/27/07): I just got a voicemail from Kodak clarifying the problem with being so slow. Turns out that if you press the shutter button after taking a picture, it leaves the picture "review mode" and back into picture-taking mode nearly instantaneously. Sorry for any confusion this may have caused.
