82.6% of laptops are made in Shanghai |

  Quick, name some of the biggest laptop-making companies. What brands come to mind? Dell, Toshiba, HP… Quanta? Compal? Wistron? You've probably never heard of those last three names, but they account 56% of all laptops made around the world. In fact, according to a recent report by iSuppli, a market research firm, a full 82.6 percent of PC notebooks are made in the lovely city of Shanghai, China.
Although the actual manufacturing is largely found in Shanghai, it appears that the vast majority of these companies are in fact based in Taiwan. In recent years, they have been "steadily [moving] their production to mainland China."
You may be surprised that most of our PC notebooks are produced in Shanghai, especially considering that you don’t recognize most of the companies found in the table below (with the notable exception of Samsung, they are all Taiwanese firms). This is because they are ODMs (original design manufacturers), or companies that make products for other companies, much like HTC producing smartphones for Qtek, i-mate, and Dopod.
