Click to ZoomFujitsu Transaction Solutions Inc.’s iPAD handheld retail computer will now offer TABLETmedia Inc.’s iFon software to provide voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) telephone capability. Fujitsu will resell the iFon software as an iPAD option.

“The combination of iPAD and iFon makes the iPAD the most complete retail appliance available today,” said Vernon Slack, marketing director for mobile solutions at Fujitsu. “Retailers can now add phone capability – and even video over IP – to the complete array of store functions they can handle with a single iPAD handheld unit. Mobile video over IP enables retailers to monitor security cameras over sensitive areas such as check-out lanes. By using one pocket-size device for all these functions, retailers can dramatically reduce their costs.”

“We are very pleased to help Fujitsu in its efforts to bring the convergence of data and communications to the retail market,” said Alessandro Gatti, chief executive officer of TABLETmedia. “The characteristics of the iPAD, including the high quality speaker and phone-friendly ergonomics, make it a uniquely suitable device for mobile enterprise users.”

The iPAD combines devices used throughout the store – scanner, magnetic- and smart-card reader, keypad with encryption capabilities, and now phone and video capability – to give the retailer a complete, wireless retail appliance. The Windows CE .NET-based iPAD goes anywhere – to do virtually anything – including inventory management, debit transactions, price verifications, line busting, mobile POS, gift registry, loss prevention and more.

TABLETmedia’s iFon software enables VoIP and video communications on wireless Windows CE and Pocket PC personal digital assistants (PDAs). It is based on the ITU-TH.323 standard and plugs directly into existing corporate IP-PBX environments and video communications systems.
