Wishing you could get a little more intimate with your computer? Swedish researcher and entrepreneur, Martin Magnusson has created a wearable computer that stays very close by. The concept behind it is really quite simple, but the engineering within is what makes it so clever. First, Magnusson bought a cheap CD case, ripped out the CD pockets and replaced them with velcro, causing the case to open like a book for all of the components. It’s then attached via a shoulder strap so you don’t have to worry about holding it up constantly or the computer falling off. Magnusson then hacked a pair of Myvu media glasses, connected with his home made machine based on a Beagleboard single computer. In order to get online, Magnusson uses bluetooth connected to his iPhone. The Beagleboard is powered using four AA batteries, allowing it to last around three hours, and if that isn’t enough time, he believes you could add battery packs to last all day if need be. “A computer is a window to the virtual world, but as soon as I get up and about, that window closes and I’m stuck within the limits of physical reality.” Magnusson says. “Wearable computers make it possible to keep the window open. All the time.”

A more realistic scenario would be for Magnusson to build a Bluetooth wireless transmitter for his Myvu glasses, projecting his iPhone display to the glasses and using that as the computer. All other hardware is really unnecessary, but a fun project I’m sure if you are going for the cyborg look.

Blueant’s new Q2 bluetooth wireless headset may not be as crystal clear as having a person next to you, buts its claiming to be the closest out there. 1.5 years after the Q1 was released, Bluant has revealed the new Q2, and if it all works out as they have planned, the wait will well worth it. Aside from having superior noise reduction, The Q2′s state-of-the-art TTS (text to speech) engine will read out weather, news, sports, traffic updates and Microsoft’s Bing 411. The Q2 will also say who is calling you so you will not have to pick up your phone. When you get a call you simply say “ignore” or “answer and to make a call you simply say “phone commands.” If you are lucky enough to own an Android 2.0 smartphone or newer, the Q2 will actually read out SMS messages and E-mails for you! The Q2 features integrated A2DP streaming audio functionality, so you can listen to music, and get turn by turn directions from your GPS. Even better, you can even stream music from a bluetooth enabled computer to your phone. If you own a business, you can connect up to two phones and answer whichever one is ringing, and switch between phones and calls if both ring at the same time. The Q2 sells for $129 at AT&T.

Electric cars will never need to be plugged in again with Evatrans new “hands-free power” technology. Although we haven’t really had any time at all to deal with the high voltage cables or plugs that are required to charge our EVs. This new invention uses a wireless induction charger (one massive Powermat) which beams electricity wirelessly. All you do is drive up to the mat and stop. From there it charges a small device placed on the undercarriage of your vehicle, and it gets better. The company will be selling these to businesses and garages, so the little mats will be available virtually everywhere you roll up. The charger itself will be available for $800, while the mats will go for under $3,500. The launch date is set for April, and by then Evatran plans on having even more features to peak our alternatively powered interests.
