iPhone 4 price is roughly $180 out of Apple’s pocket

iphone-4-dissected-200

The Apple iPhone 4 price remains quite competitive when considering that it shares several of the same components that its oversized brother, the iPad does. The same A4 processor, possibly clocked down to conserve battery life, a wireless 802.11N antenna, Bluetooth 2.1 module and 16GB/32GB of memory are some of the common similarities the two devices share. Screen size is obviously reduced on the iPhone, Retina Display technology does give it that extra sharpness, but the iPad’s display added roughly $95 to it’s manufacturing component cost; more than double that of the iPhone 4.

Apple sells 600,000 iPhone 4 units on launch day

Apple sold 600,000 iPhone 4 units during a pre-order blitz yesterday

AT&T put the breaks on pre-orders for the Apple iPhone 4 yesterday. Apple managed to sell 600,000 units on launch day demolishing iPhone 3GS pre-orders ten fold. Due to the large number of people rushing the websites, a few things got bogged down and many users couldn’t get their pre-order in. So it’s possible Apple could have broken the 1 million mark if they were able to handle the traffic.

Apple iPhone 4 official, has HD but no 4G

iphone-4

With leaks coming from California bars to Taiwanese manufacturing plants, the newest iPhone 4 release by Apple will definitely go down in history as one of the worst kept secrets the company has ever had. Was it all marketing, or just carelessness? No one will ever know, but legal actions against Gizmodo for revealing the device ahead of schedule can only lead us to believe it wasn’t intended. At the WWDC today Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4 and it appears to be just as we thought it would. A front facing camera allows you two-way video communication over VoIP with other iPhone 4 users, this is done through a new app called FaceTime (see video below). HD video (720p / 30fps) can be recorded on the back side camera with the new iMovie app that will cost an extra $5. Still shots have been upgraded with a 5 megapixel sensor and 5x digital zoom from the rear which is accompanied by an LED flash.

Apple sells 2 million iPads in under 60 days

Apple iPad as a "carputer" Photo: Flickr

When Apple first launched the iPad in the United States, it was relatively unknown how it would perform in the open market. Being the first device of its kind, Apple took a gamble by yet again giving us technology that we didn’t know we needed, until of course we shelled out some coin to get it. The iPad is a rock star, it sold 1 million units in the first month, beating the companies very own iPhone smartphone.

Apple the new alpha dog in tech

Apple the new alpha dog in tech Photo: Funny Hub

In only one month Microsoft lost a $25 billion lead over Apple in market capitalization, dropped behind by $3 billion, gave Apple the alpha dog status of tech, and all the leverage and power that comes with the sought after top spot.

This is not news to consumers who continue to eagerly mob Apple’s hot new iPhone and iPad models; Microsoft’s consumer products business continues to struggle for every breath. Their decline was underlined by the past weeks of market instability, bringing down the former heavyweight champ’s shares 15%, while Apple’s stock is down just over 6%.

Apple iPad goes international

There’s no reason why anybody should be awake at 5 a.m., but for Apple lovers there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be awake.

Today marks the launch of Apple’s iPad in Australia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland, the U.K. and Canada. The tablet computer arrived in the United States at the start of April and so for international Apple fans that had to wait another two months, May 28 couldn’t come any faster.

Apple back-to-school promo starts early, free iPod touch with Mac

Apple Back to School promo starts early

It may be hard to believe, but Apple has already started its back-to-school marketing campaign; one of the biggest promotions for this campaign is the free iPod touch with the purchase of just about any Mac computer. This is far from a unique promotion, since the Cupertino-based company has been offering the free iPod around the back-to-school time for several years, but this is kind of early, don’t you think? High school students might still be in school and the college kids only got off about a month ago.

Apple iPod touch 4G with 2-megapixel camera “leaked”

ipod-touch-200

For the longest time, there were only a handful of things that separated the iPod touch from the Apple iPhone. The cellular connectivity is an obvious one, but it seems that one of the other differentiating factors is also going to be removed. According to the most recent leaks, the upcoming fourth-generation iPod touch will boast a two-megapixel digital camera. Up until now, the iPod touch has been lacking in the photography department, so this is probably a good change for the better. I don’t think it will cannibalize iPhone sales any more than the current iPod touch does.

Our neighbors to the south have had access to the Apple iPad for some time already, but it’s finally coming to Canada and Rogers Wireless looks like it’s the only one announcing a data plan for the big touchscreen device.

Rogers has officially announced its iPad data plans and they’re actually not that bad. On the lower end of the scale if the $15/month plan and that gets you 250MB of use. Heavier users can bump up to the $35/month plan for 5GB of data. Both plans come with unlimited access to Rogers WiFi Hot Spots.

Apple takes throne as biggest American phone company

apple-iphone

Ever since cell phones first appeared on the scene decades ago, Motorola has dominated the American market. It was the first company to sell a commercial cell phone (as far as I know), but how the mighty have fallen. In fact, Motorola isn’t even the biggest American cell phone maker anymore. That coveted title has now been earned by Apple. Neither company makes it into the top five among international phone makers, but this is still a major boon for Steve Jobs and Apple.

During the first quarter of this year, Motorola sold a total of 8.5 million phones, but Apple was able to post record sales of 8.8 million iPhones over the same period. It’s not that surprising to hear that Motorola’s sales are down, but they’re down a lot more than you may think.
