Take note that this isn’t a final list and it won’t be any surprise if some really new and unexpected stuff suddenly rears their heads.
Samsung Galaxy S8 (and the Galaxy Note 7 is gone forever)
Samsung’s initial opportunity in 2017 to recover from the Galaxy Note 7 debacle will come with the launch of its new flagship phone, the Galaxy S8. Nothing much is known about the new phone, but Samsung has announced that it will include a new digital assistant powered by Viv, the artificial intelligence startup Samsung bought earlier this year from the same people who created Siri. In connection, the future for Samsung’s Note lineup is uncertain due to the unprecedented recall of the Galaxy Note 7 this year. There has even been inside company talk that Samsung will abandon the Note altogether in 2017, which makes the focus on the Galaxy S8 understandable.
A Foldable Samsung Phone?
Still with Samsung, the company has been working on bendable displays for years, but 2017 could be the first time consumers will actually see it in a phone. The company recently filed a patent for such a device and this only fuels speculation that the phone may be coming soon.
Apple is expected to refresh its iPad lineup in the spring of 2017, which is surprising considering the slow decline of tablet purchase towards bigger smartphones or more compact laptops. The new iPad models will focus on the Pro line, with improvements to the Apple Pencil stylus and new screen sizes.
A New iMac
While the iMac has been updated with new, high-resolution displays in recent years, it’s been a long time since Apple has significantly updated the computer itself. Apple is considering adding the new USB-C port to the iMac lineup and this makes sense since the company’s other computers are adopting the new standard too.
The next iPhone will be a major refresh for the product. The supposedly assumed iPhone 8 is being rumored to have an all-glass design, an organic LED display for better images, no home button, new screen sizes, and much more, as expected from a new Apple phone. Apple is also working on adding built-in augmented reality features such as all-around apps not found in any other phones. 2017 will also mark the iPhone’s tenth birthday, so expect Apple to go all out to celebrate the momentous occasion.
New Google Laptop Running a Special Version of Android
Google is planning a major overhaul of its Chrome and Android operating systems. The soon-to-be-named Andromeda OS will also power a new kind of laptop being created by Google. The computer is expected to launch in the fall of 2017 and show off Google’s vision for the future of Chromebooks. The laptop is said to work as both a tablet and traditional laptop and have a lot of power under the hood.
