Many people slouch, regardless of age and sex. Just look around the office and count how many are forming the letter C with their spine. Most people slump from time to time but habitual slouching since a young age can eventually lead to bad posture. A bad posture either starts from a bad sitting habit since our younger days or developed into a bad slouching habit at school or at work. Slouching can lead to back strains and backaches. But now, there’s a device to correct habitual slouching and bad posture. It’s called Upright and it’s a wearable device that’s designed to retrain your back not to slouch. It uses a digital vibrating nag for the good intention of correcting your bad posture that may lead to better back health.
Upright is sold together with a wireless charging cradle, a stack of adhesive pads, and some alcohol wipes. It is a small and white plastic device that measures only five 5 X 2 inches in size. Before using it, you need to download the Android or iOS app on to your smartphone or tablet and connect it using Bluetooth to the Upright device. Once the app is set up, simply follow the clear, step-by-step instructions. Place an adhesive at the back of the device and, using this adhesive, attach it to your lower back. The app will instruct you to feel with your hands for the “sweet spot” between the bottom of your rib cage and the top of your pelvis. After attaching the device to your lower back, you’ll need to calibrate it using the app. The app will prompt you to sit upright and then to slouch. This is so the sensors inside the Upright can record the proper posture positions and the algorithm then adjusts to your back.

The one little drawback (if it is such) is that you’ll need to recalibrate every time you attach Upright to your back since you might not put it in exactly the same spot each time. So, the device simply works like this: Every time you slouch, the Upright vibrates. If you look at the app you’ll also see your training period counting down depending on the time period it suggests from a few hours to a full day. You’ll also see how many times you’ve been slumping in a period. You get a happy green face with mostly good posture; an orange face for a small number of slouching; an unhappy red face when you’ve been slumping a lot of times. Because Upright is almost unobtrusive you tend to forget about it, but you’ll soon be reminded when it vibrates. It’s a bit like having a small robot with a cattle prod sitting behind you, watching for the slightest slump so it can jolt you back to good posture. But yes, it does tend to give you a fright when you’re focused on work and your back suddenly vibrates. Upright is created and developed by Oded Cohen, its CEO and founder, along with this brilliant team of Gen-X’s and millennials.
