Everyone knows who Hong Kong actor and stuntman Jackie Chan is, (he contends he is more proudly “Hong Kong” rather than Chinese) and with his success he is easily one of China’s (or Hong Kong’s) multi-millionaires. So it’s no surprise when Jackie Chan recently unveiled his latest “toy” purchase as he became the first Chinese customer for a Brazilian Embraer Legacy 500 business jet with a price tag of only $20 million. The Embraer Legacy 500 is one of four in the Legacy series of Ebraer’s corporate jet series that includes the older Phenom and the newer Lineage. The 500 features the jet manufacturer’s best up-to-date technologies and incorporates designs that maximize passenger comfort and fuel efficiency. “I’m so thrilled to receive this Legacy 500, a state-of-art executive jet,” Chan said in a statement. In 2012, Chan purchased his first private jet, an Embraer Legacy 650 that allowed him better access to his acting and philanthropic works around the world.

The actor will be using the Legacy 650 for transoceanic flights while the newly purchased Legacy 500 will be more for shorter trips. The Legacy 500 is the latest offering from Brazil’s Embraer (Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica) Aerospace. It is one of the largest aircraft makers in the world that manufactures commercial, private, agricultural, and military aircraft. Embraer was founded in the 1940’s as a government domestic aircraft manufacturer until its privatization in 1994, but is still the Brazilian government’s top aircraft contractor. Embraer gained international popularity for its fuel efficient commercial aircraft such as the Embraer 190’s and 195’s, the EMB Tucano series and KC-390 for the Brazilian Air Force, and private corporate jet series such as the Phenom and Legacy. The Legacy 500 is a mid-size and mid-range business jet with a range of 3,600 miles. It can carry up to 12 passengers, but most customers prefer the 8-passenger customized cabin setup.

It is powered by a pair of Honeywell HTF75000E turbofan engines. Each can produce more than 7,000 pounds of thrust. This results in the 500’s top speed of 83 knots and can cruise to a height of 45,000 feet. In the aerospace market, aside from Boeing and Airbus that are undeniably the world’s leading aircraft manufacturing leaders, Embraer is attempting to compete against other commercial private jets such as the American Cessna Citation Sovereign, the Canadian Bombardier Challenger 300, and the American General Dynamics Gulfstream G280. The Legacy 500 has a surprisingly cavernous interior. The choices for a customized interior can range from the more relaxing and low-contrast look, a striking high-contrast scheme, to the more business and entertainment look. Embraer is the only aircraft manufacturer to employ a flat floor design instead of the traditional deep well aisles of its competitors, as well as a wet galley. The whole passenger cabin can be controlled using individual touch screens or iPhone or iPad controllers. It has full Wi-Fi connectivity and a high definition entertainment system.
