Yes, its real! An engineer has designed a detachable plane cabin, that will save the live of passengers during plane crashes, by detaching itself from the rest of the aircraft.
Tatarenko Vladimir Nikolaevich, a Ukrainian engineer, has been working on this idea for the past three years. He has created a prototype of the detachable cabin that can be ejected at any time, including mid-air emergencies, and allow the passengers to land safely.
Once the capsule (as he calls it), pulls away from the rest of the plane, the parachutes attached to the capsule will open immediately and will guide the capsule safely to the ground. The design also has inflatables attached to the bottom the capsule, which will not only make the ground-landing safe, but also allow the cabin to land and float on the water easily.
In Tatarenko’s words,”Surviving in a plane crash is possible. While aircraft engineers all over the world are trying to make planes safer, they can do nothing about the human factor.”
He also added,”The existing technology of using of Kevlar and carbon composites for fuselage, wings, flaps, spoilers, ailerons, tail will be used during the design. It allows to partly compensate the weight of parachute system.”
The design also includes a luggage space right beneath the passengers cabin. This way, the passengers won’t lose their personal belongings if it detaches during a crash.
While some people are appreciating the idea of saving thousands of lives, some are already sceptical about it. There are already questions being raised about overall weakening of the plane structure because of the detachable part and cost effectiveness of designing a whole new fleet of aircrafts. The safety of pilots and crew members is also being questioned.
However, according to Tatarenko’s survey, 95% of the people already to pay more, if their safety is guaranteed during the flight.
