The theory that employees of the assembly plant (other a plant managers star-struck pre-teen daughter) might have smuggled one out and given it to him out of celeb adoration isn't all that unlikely, given the stupid things people have done for/to celebrities in North America over the years. It could be a mock-up someone gave him, but I imagine he's already a 4S owner so I imagine he'd be able to figure out that it wasn't Apple-spec pretty fast.
