The iPhone "5" is what most people have begun to refer to it as namely because for some reason or another is was decided by someone (who? Don't know) that iPhone 4S was simply an upgrade to the fifth generation iPhone (iphone 4) and not a whole generation leap. But yes, for the record, the next iPhone is the sixth iPhone.

There isn't one particular media outlet calling it iPhone 5, it's most online publications so no need to rudely attack anyone. Think of the naming like this - Microsoft's Windows 7 isn't REALLY Windows 7 since there have been ten major Windows products (not including Windows CE-based projects). As Shakespeare once wrote, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by another name would smell as sweet".

To be honest, the next iPhone will likely be called "the next iPhone" (just like they did with the iPad), making the whole naming convention irrelevant.

Let me spell this out for you muppet 'journalists.'
iPhone, iPhone 3G, 3GS, 4, 4s.
The 4S was the *fifth* generation. Therefore, the next iPhone will be the iPhone 6, as opposed to the iPhone 5 as you ignoramus' have come to call it. I'm disgusted that I actually have to count to six for you fuckwits.
