I first read about biomimicry machines like this in The Keepers WWIII. Now we’ve all seen animal-like war machines in movies like Star Wars and The Matrix. Those movies never explained why, and so they were just a flight of fancy, a whimsical creation. However, The Keepers was the first fiction I had ever read or seen that explained that such fantastic machines could actually have a utilitarian purpose. The elephant walkers in Star Wars, for instance, looked cool, but they actually didn’t seem to have a point to their form. On the other hand, the author of the keepers, Rick Friar, used a quadrupedal animal known for it’s prowess in mobility, the fast and agile cheetah. And here we are, 6 years later, and DARPA’s making a cheetah machine. That book is slowly but surely showing itself to be hauntingly true
