New Program Allows For Windows Phone Customization

When it comes to Windows Phone 7, the live tiles certainly can be a bit bland. For those of us that have been waiting for Microsoft to do something about this lack of customization options, our wait is finally over.

Of course, it is no thanks to the folks at Redmond and the new customization options are instead possible thanks to a new Windows-based application, “Themes for Windows Phone”.  The only downside is that you will need an unlocked phone running Windows Phone 7.5 Mango in order for this program to work.

If your phone is unlocked, the theme manager will give you the following options:

  • You can use any image as a background for tiles.
  • You can use an accent color for overlay transparency.
  • Customize any tile (system or 3rd party).
  • Import and export themes.

This program is only for Windows, and so Mac and Linux users will have to look elsewhere.

While this program is pretty handy, a better solution would be in the form of a Microsoft-sanctioned option that is built into Windows Phone. For now though, at least we have this program to quench our thirst for customization.
