With the new exclusive deal Nokia has with Microsoft, their future lies with Windows Phone and completely different hardware specs. This sounds like they are just fulfilling some remaining contractual obligations before dumping Symbian, the hardware and all of these games. Since they payed for the tech, they might as well test it out before year's end. If they find that people are using NFC, then it might be an option for Microsoft and Nokia to discuss in the future.
