Tomorrow’s Apple iPad 2 Launch Day Details

Before you grab your sleeping bag and comic books for a good night of sleeping outside the Apple Store, you might want to know a little bit more about the iPad 2 launch day details for tomorrow. For starters, you’re not getting the iPad 2 first thing in the morning.

Press releases have been issued by Apple, AT&T, and Verizon Wireless that the in-store purchases of the second iPad will not start until 5pm local time on March 11. That means that if you’re camping tonight, you’ll need to pack a breakfast and a lunch (and maybe an afternoon snack) for the long wait.

If you don’t need to have the shiny new tablet in your hand tomorrow, you can actually buy it sooner by visiting either the AT&T or Apple website starting at 1AM PST (4PM EST) tomorrow. Pricing is the same, but you’d have to wait for delivery.

Verizon will only sell the CDMA iPad, of course, and it’ll have four data plans ranging from $20 for 1GB to $80 for 10GB. AT&T, on the flip side, will only sell the GSM iPad and it has two plans: $14.99 for 250MB or $25 for 2GB. Those of you outside the USA will have to wait until the 26th.

Do you have details on how the AT&T plans work? Specifically, I travel between the US and Europe very frequently, and would like to use the ipad everywhere. I assume I have to go for the AT&T plan so I will have GSM. Also it seems there is a max of 2GB pre-paid for AT&T which seems low for me. I know you can go over and pay extra but this will be expensive if I used the amount of expect. Any thoughts on this?

    • As far as I can tell, 2GB is the biggest plan that AT&T is offering. To use the iPad 2 on 3G overseas, you’ll be paying (massively) for roaming data… my suggestion would be to stock with WiFi or, if you’d like, wait for a way to SIM unlock the iPad 2 (which I believe is locked to AT&T if you buy from them) and get a prepaid SIM when over in Europe. If you buy the 3G model from an Apple Store, I believe they’re unlocked but don’t quote me on that.
