iCade for iPad is the oldschool arcade cabinet we’ve always wanted

A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, there was a time when kids would leave their homes if they wanted to play video games. They would gather at gaming cafes, then called “arcades,” to drop coins into the large wooden boxes that housed individual games such as Ms. Pacman, Street Fighter or Frogger. Yes, we hope you remember this time, because we sure do and miss it too.

Ion has moved to bring back the “arcade” concept with their iCade iPad dock.  The box turns your iPad into a miniature version of the gaming cabinets of old. And though it won’t get you out of the house or put you into any sort of social situations, the dock’s Bluetooth joystick kit will still give you that nostalgic arcade feeling while playing your retro games.

The only complaint I have is that it only allows your iPad to sit in the portrait position rather than giving the option for either orientation. But I’m sure Atari and others will be taking this into consideration when developing games to play through the iCade.

And if you can’t find the game you’re looking for in Atari’s library, Ion says new and existing apps can be “easily updated to work with iCade.”

Ion plans to release the dock in late spring this year for about $100.

Hey guy, when you write a review about a product you might want to look it over before you give faulty complaints. There is a groove in front of the cabinet that allows for landscape placement. So take THAT into consideration Raggy.

Wow, my 8th year at CES was awesome (not bad for a 14 year old).

Anyway, the ipad will sit nicely in either position, but if you play
aggressive it seems like it might pop out easier in landscape mode.

It looks cool and I can’t wait to see the other ATARI titles.

I hope ION will advertise on my network and I would love to get one for myself.
