Amazon’s latest Kindle iteration unveiled today is cheaper and more advanced then its predecessors. Apple’s iPad was always expected to be the Kindle Killer, but never really disrupted the Amazon’s sales of its eReading tablet. In fact Amazon sells more Kindle books than they do hardcovers, and expect that number to “surpass all paperbacks sold sometime in the next nine to twelve months” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder & CEO. Kindle sales tripled in June when Amazon lowered the price to $189, we can only imagine what will happen now that the price has been reduced to $139 by simply dropping 3G and giving a Wi-Fi only version.
The Kindle Wi-Fi–only (it’s official name) has a new sleek design, claims to have 50% better contrast, 20% faster page turns, all the while packing it inside a 21% smaller body with 15% less weight. Although the Kindle is strictly an eReader tablet without all the video, apps, and gaming options the iPad is capable of, it could sure put a dent in it’s eReading marketshare. Not everyone needs an iPad, but most people want to stop cutting down trees to make new books.
Amazon has a proprietary waveform and font technology that they used in the new Kindle to make pages turn faster and fonts appear sharper. It’s super thin too, at 1/3 of an inch thin it’s lighter than a paperback and thinner than a magazine.
“At this price point, many people are going to buy multiple units for the home and family.” Said Bezos. Expecting the $139 device to outsell all Kindles to date, it is quite possible at that price.
