I've taken laptops and PC parts from Taipei back over to the USA. There is no customs or duty that you have to pay. Also, the stores give you the option for English or Mandarin on certain things like operating system installations. So yeah, there's definitely no customs on transporting parts, unless you have mass quantities for the purpose of re-selling.

Depends on what it is, but you can usually bring back new goodies undetected if you ditch the box. Check into the warranty stuff, but sometimes the difference in price makes it worth it anyhow. And even if you get a laptop (for example) in Chinese, you can always change the language in the OS.

Lets not FORGET (apparently the writer DID) that you'll be PAYING CUSTOMS AND DUTY charges when you reenter the country you came from!! ESPECIALLY The USA!!

And you had better think about two things:
1) Who's going to cover the warranty when you get back home???
2) You better make sure you get a model that is in the language YOU USE, not Mandarin!
