I have a soft spot for hot hatches. The hatchback is functional, fun, and (typically) fuel efficient. Well, it turns out that the 2012 Audi A2 will be even more fuel efficient, because it’ll be offered as an electric-only model. Not only that, but it’s starting to sound like the German automaker will only offer the Audi A2 in its electric powertrain configuration. No gas. No diesel. Just pure electric. It’s debatable whether or not electric cars may not be the future, but they sound like a good intermediary.
The idea is that the compact Audi A2 with its full electric powertrain will compete directly against the BMW Megacity, which is set to launch in 2013. By hitting the market one year earlier, Audi could get the jump on the competition.
It’s good to see more manufacturers embrace the electric car as a truly viable alternative to cars powered by fossil fuels. In fact, Audi chairman Ruper Stadler has stated that “electric drive” is the company’s top priority.
