GM to build electric motors in-house
General Motors (GM) today revealed a plan to become the first major US automobile manufacturer to design and make electric motors, paving the way for a revolutionary future of electrified vehicles.
An investment of $246 million USD will be used to expand in-house electric vehicle research and developments which could end at the White Marsh, Maryland transmission plant.
GM’s next-generation electric motors are schedule to roll off the line in 2013 in rear-wheel drive two-mode hybrid vehicles. The US Department of Energy chose GM last year in August giving them a $105-million grant for the construction US manufacturing facilities to produce electric motors and related electric drive components.
