I would love to get rid of my landline but I don't want to lose Internet access. Does anyone know how I can get Web access without having a landline? For me this is not about getting rid of wires, per se--I simply donrt want to pay $100/month for a package of Internet and voice when I have no need for the voice plan aspect, and don't particularly need my Web access to be high-speed.

In Belgium, the landline connection comes free of charge when you have Telenet cable TV and Internet. So cost is not an issue.

Other nice features are :

1. You don't have to recharge it.
2. You actually *can* get away from it, without having to feel guilty for not packing a (mobile) phone.
3. Small kids shouldn't be exposed to mobile phone microwaves, just as a measure of precaution.
4. My wife can talk her friends' and family's ears off, for all I care.
5. Stay-over foreign guests can use our phone for long distance calls without worrying about pay-back.
6. You get listed (unless you don't want it) free of charge in the White Pages, so people can get in touch.
7. In a large house, a system with several mobile handsets comes easy, and doubles as an intercom.

Ditched it, for the same reasons as you did - I had better things to do with my money. I actually don't even have a contract on my cell phone either, I use a prepaid phone which saves me even more. Plus, I hate contracts (especially the cell phone type).
There is this new $30 plan from Tracfone called Straight Talk which has created a lot of hype. I'm on that now and very happy so far.
