While you could certainly make use of the Apple App Store to get a variety of fart apps and tip calculators, I think the real value comes from the variety of mobile games that you can enjoy on Apple’s touchscreen handhelds. One of the latest to hit the iPhone and iPod touch is the original Golden Axe.
This is a direct port of the 1989 arcade classic from Sega, complete with that angry dwarf and those mildly annoying blue-hooded guys that run around, providing you with health potions if you poke them. Realiticaly, you could say the iPhone version of Golden Axe is closer to the Sega Genesis version that was released in the early 90s.
Since the iPhone does not have any physical buttons, the controls have been mapped to the touchscreen in the form of a virtual d-pad and face buttons. If you prefer, you can use the accelerometer instead, but that would really take away from this retro appeal.
Myself, I’ve always enjoyed the great side-scrolling beat-em-ups of the 80s and 90s. I couldn’t get enough of Final Fight, TMNT, The Simpsons, X-Men, and countless others. Golden Axe also holds a very special place in my nostalgic gaming heart.
Find Golden Axe for iPhone in the App Store for $4.99.
