While some people may think that you can only get fart and fake beer apps on the iPhone, the touchscreen cell phone can also be equipped with a wide range of productivity tools and utilities. Continuing with its versatility is the release of a family of WritePad applications from PhatWire.

Available for the iPhone and iPod Touch are no fewer than three new applications, all of which use the WritePad text editor with built-in handwriting recognition and advanced editing features. If you don’t like the standard on-screen keyboard, you can take the route of regular writing instead and the recognition algorithm should take care of the rest. It’ll even auto-correct common spelling errors.

WritePad Affairs is designed to help organize daily tasks, jobs, and contracts. You can think of it as another to-do list type of application, but it offers some pretty useful features. For example, you can sort the items based on due date, subject, priority, color, category, and status. You can also import and export items compatible with the Outlook Tasks format.

WritePad Events is a calendar-type application with the same kind of sorting functionality as Affairs. Also like Affairs, you can import and export CSV files compatible with the Microsoft Outlook Journal format. WritePad Notes is a notepad organizer with both landscape and portrait orientation. All three apps allow for copy and paste… and they’re all free! Find them in the App Store or iTunes.

WritePad sucks. I can point and peck a paragraph on the keyboard before WritePad even gives me one sentence. The only option for truly fast input and handwriting recognition for smartphones is Graffiti – when will it come to the iPhone?
