Windows XP? Ubuntu? Those take far too long to get going and that’s why Lenovo has opted for SplashTop Linux for its QuickStart-branded line of netbook computers.

SplashTop is an “instant-on” Linux environment that was originally developed by DeviceVM. From what I hear, this environment is embedded in the motherboard, so it can literally get you into the system and onto the Internet in a matter of moments. Asus has already started building motherboards with SplashTop.

It’s not to say that the Lenovo QuickStart is truly instant. Some are saying that it takes as much as 10 seconds to get started. Come on! I don’t have 10 seconds to spare!
