Before the software based solutions came along, people were unlocking their iPhones using a specialized piece of hardware. Seeing how the iPhone 3G is fundamentally the same as the classic iPhone (it’s funny how something only one year old is already a classic), it would only make sense that this old school hardware hack would work too.

If you’re stuck in one of the few places where it is not possible to officially purchase an iPhone 3G, you’re in luck. Someone has managed to unlock the new touchscreen wonder, effectively making the iPhone 3G very friendly to importing. Yes, it has happened again. The fix uses a special card that piggybacks on your SIM card, tricking the iPhone into thinking that it is connected to an official carrier.

The effectiveness of this simple hack has not been officially verified and there is still no word on when the specialized piece of hardware will become available.
