It seems that most carmakers are making an attempt to go green these days and Renault is no exception. The French automaker has announced that they are working on an all-electric city car and they hope to have it on the road by 2012. The goal is to have the electric people-mover ready in time for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
It’s not like Renault is new to the world of electric cars either, because they created the Zoom concept car way back in 1992. The new vehicle will be engineered from the ground up and it will not be just a concept; they’re looking for mass market appeal here and they “car would be sold from that point onwards”, said Renault Director of Product Planning Patrick Pelata, referring to the 2012 Games.
The size of the yet unnamed all-electric city car would be similar to the size of the Twingo. Interestingly, Nissan also plans to have an all-electric vehicle in 2012, so they could be sharing technology and platforms. After all, the two marques have had an alliance since 1999.
