Realistically, you already knew that this was happening. By and large, consumer-level Acer laptops are a fair bit cheaper than their Asus counterparts, so the same trend can only be expected when it comes to the Asus Eee PC competitor too, right?

As you may have heard, the Asus Eee PC has been a hugely successful product for the people at Asustek and they are following up on this success with a slightly larger 8.9-inch model later this year. The subnotebook with the bigger screen will also carry a slightly bigger price tag. Early estimates have the 8.9-inch Eee getting priced at close to $500.

On the flip side, the Acer equivalent — which will be released about a month after the one from Asustek — will probably sell for between $350 and $400, representing a solid $100 difference in price. Will this be enough for people to consider the Acer over the Asus? We’ll find out this May.
