The planets aligned and Steve Jobs took the stage. The day that everyone has been waiting for has finally happened, because the iPhone SDK is now available for public consumption. And it’s free.

Many people have been developing homebrew applications for jailbroken iPhones pretty well since the concept of a jailbreak was created, but the SDK represents an opportunity for these same people to develop legitimate apps for the iPhone. This means that you can start publishing these creations through the iTunes App Store.

That’s the good news. The bad news is that if you want to get in on this legitimate publishing thing, it’ll cost you $99 a year. The iTunes App Store represents the only way that you can distribute programs created through the SDK.
