There’s no denying how much of an influence Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal has over the mainstream consumer, so when he goes at length previewing the Lenovo ThinkPad X300, you know that’s got to mean something.

In one of his most recent posts, he directly compares the X300 against the MacBook Air. To really drive this comparison home, Mossberg even places the ThinkPad X300 on top of the now ridiculously famous manila envelope. Yes, the Lenovo offering can fit in there too, though I’d recommend against actually shipping the notebook that way.

Among the highlights on the Lenovo ThinkPad X300, in case you missed it the first time around, are the full 13-inch widescreen display, full keyboard, WiFi, GPS, and your choice of Windows XP or Vista. As a leg up over the MacBook Air, the X300 boasts a built-in DVD drive, removable battery, three USB ports, and a wired Ethernet jack. Prices are expected to start at $2,500 or so.
