That crazy penguin is making some huge strides toward the mainstream, because Dell has announced that they will be preloading the Linux-based Ubuntu 7.10 OS in their new XPS 1330n notebook computer. From what I can gather, this unit is similar in many ways to the Windows-based XPS m1330, with the obvious difference of hte operating system.
Critical features on the Dell XPS 1330n — which will be sold in Tuxedo Black, Midnight Blue, and Crimson Red — include such things as an Intel Core 2 Duo T5450 processor, a hard drive ranging from 120GB to 320GB, up to 4GB of SDRAM, and a 13.3-inch WXGA display with 1280 x 800 resolution. There is also an option for a 64GB SSD, though that will surely come at quite a hefty premium.
The initial launch is being planned for Europe with a follow-up into North America within the first week of February 2008. Are you excited about getting Linux pre-installed on your Dell laptop? I wonder if the removal of the Microsoft tax will result in a lower price point.
