You want range? You want to drive for miles and miles and not worrying about topping up the fuel tank? A special hydrogen-powered Toyota Highlander just might be the ticket. In a recent test in Japan, drivers took the fuel cell-powered sport utility vehicle for a trip between Osaka and Tokyo without stopping to refuel.

This is a distance of 350 miles and they had the air conditioning on the entire time. They say that this vehicle could have gone as far as 550 miles before it would run out of fuel and die on the side of the road. That’s quite remarkable, especially considering that the Highlander is a fairly large and heavy SUV.

Engineers are saying that the new hydrogen-fueled Highlander got a fuel efficiency improvement by a quarter as well as a tank that doubled in size. They also mention that the power control system has been “upgraded to perform better.”
