Just because you’ve got yourself a portable computer doesn’t mean that you need to sacrifice storage capacity. Toshiba has created the world’s first 320 gigabyte 5400RPM SATA-based notebook hard drive. This spinning platter is a part of the new 5400rpm MK-GSX series of hard drives, but if you’re feeling an exceptionally strong need for speed, there’s also the MK-GSY series which spins at 7200rpm.

The new Toshiba hard drives all support the 3gbps SATA interface. To offer better usability and ruggedness, Toshiba has also included a built-in sensor that “automatically parks the read/write head if the drive falls farther than 10 inches.” That should give a little extra piece of mind.

We’re still waiting on word from Toshiba regarding pricing and availability, but knowing them, we’ll see these hard drives in their laptops first.
