Homebrew FTW! Even though his royal Jobness said that third-party applications were a big no-no on the iPhone, the Apple community has come through with all sorts of fun things for us to enjoy, like the NES emulator. But those are just for fun and games; what about something functional?

Erica Sadun has developed a simple iPhone voice recorder utility that lets you, as you can probably guess, record quick voice notes on your Apple cell phone. Available for download here with more detailed instructions here, the voice recording app features just two on-screen buttons: one for start/stop and the other to save/quit. Simplicity is good.

Sound recordings are saved in AMR (Adaptive Multi-Rate) format, the standard for voice notes on most cell phones. It can be played back in Quicktime.
