Everyone seems to getting on board the hybrid train these days, and Porsche is not immune. In fact, the Porsche Cayenne Hybrid SUV is capable of cruising at 70mph on batteries alone with absolutely no help from the internal combustion engine. Naturally, the gasoline engine will still be needed to accelerate up to that speed, but as soon as you do, you can effectively shut the engine off and cruise on battery power alone.

As a result, highway driving can have a theoretical fuel economy rating of infinity miles per gallon, but this assumes that the electric batteries never run out of juice (they eventually do, of course). Porsche is saying that this Cayenne hybrid “will be much faster in battery mode than current hybrids, which only manage 30-40mph.” The hybrid Cayenne is said to be 25% more efficient than the current model.

Look for the Cayenne Hybrid to hit showrooms in the next 2-3 years. Obviously, there’s a premium to be paid to get into the gas-electric dance compared to the conventional gas-only model.
