MacBook Pro iSight Camera Gets Double the Resolution

While it’s nice to have a laptop with an integrated webcam, being restricted to a mere VGA resolution is a big downer. If you’re in the market for a new MacBook Pro laptop, you may be in for a bit of a surprise, because Apple has decided to plunk a 1.3 megapixel iSight cam in there instead of the VGA unit that was used in the past.

Interestingly, while Apple is giving you a camera that is perfectly capable of capturing images at 1280 x 1024, none of the main programs have been tweaked to accept this higher resolution. Instead, the iChat and iLife apps are still stuck in VGA land, so you’ll have to wait for some sort of software update to take advantage. That, or you can go third party I guess.

The announcement was pretty quiet and didn’t come with any of that huge fanfare we’ve come to expect from Apple announcements. I guess they’re too busy with the launch of the iPhone and with the development of OS X Leopard.
