On display at Auto Shanghai 2007, the Volkswagen CrossPolo is very clearly based on the same platform as the Golf/Rabbit, but it has a distinctly more rugged personality. The roof bars make me think of the all-wheel-drive Suzuki SX4, though I’m pretty sure that the CrossPolo only does the two-wheel-drive dance.

The VW CrossPolo has some clear SUV-like styling to it — that’s probably where the “cross” part of its name comes from — but it still a little compact car through and through. If it is indeed based on the Polo being sold in Europe, then in all likelihood, this car will come equipped with either a 1.8L turbocharged straight-four good for about 147 horsepower, or a 2.0L naturally-aspirated straight-four developing a miserly 114hp.
