Yup, we’re back to next-generation fuel talks again, but this time we’re crossing the Pacific, heading on over to the Shanghai Motor Show where General Motors unveiled the latest iteration of its E-Flex fuel cell platform. The giant wheels may indicate a whole lot of power, but this is more about being environmentally conscious than anything else. The E-Flex platform was designed to provide a “plug-in electrically driven vehicle that could accomodate different auxiliary power units for extending the range.”

The previous model relied on a flex-fuel gas/E85 engine, whereas the current one appears to be wholly run by GM’s internally developed fuel cell technology. It’s just a platform for now, but it could find implementation in next-gen vehicles like the Chevy Volt. Are fuel cells the wave of the automotive future? Is GM leading the way? Or is this just one big pipe dream? I guess we’ll just have to wait and find out.
