A la Mobile Reveals Linux-based Software for GSM, Wi-Fi

A la Mobile has updated its Linux-based mobile phone software with an eye toward the burgeoning GSM, Wi-Fi convergence.

Not a closed-up set of code so much as an operating document for a new way of approaching the mobile phone, A la Mobile’s Linux kernel-based system incorporates a standard SIP-based VoIP client and adds Flash, Java, email, and even a browser.

The San Ramon, Calif.-based company has one customer so far, a Malaysian phone manufacturer that will begin selling mobiles using the Linux-based software this summer. With the jury still out on whether it’s a good idea to marry the two ways of connectivity, Linux-based mobile OSes will continue to drive their point home with more and more user-friendly updates.
