Mobile payments haven’t quite caught on over on this side of the Pacific, but they’re gaining in popularity over in Japan and Korea. In what may be the most unlikely of partnerships, NTT DoCoMo has inked a deal with McDonald’s that will let customers buy Happy Meals using specially-equipped mobile phones.

Similar readers and services have been set up around the nation wherein people can buy train tickets, snacks, and so forth at participating retailers. All it takes is a special chip in the phone. What’s more, when you go and splurge on those 100s of calories, you will not only enjoy the convenience of mobile payment, but also “special promotions for some users.”

The venture is set to launch in July.
