3GSM is all about moving forward, and launches of processor and memory chips at the annual Barcelona tech show are designed with mobile TV in mind.
Leading the way for cameraphones was Micron Technology, which introduced a new 1.75-micron pixel image sensor that can capture video at 30 frames a second at 1080 pixels, a very advanced figure comparison for such a labor-intensive process.
Also onboard was OmniVision Technologies, with a 5.17-megapixel camera sensor for mobile handsets, and Qualcomm, with an announcement that its UBM chip would be delivered ahead of schedule.
A key element of mobile TV functionality is the ability to store potentially large files. SanDisk made an enhancement announcement to that effect, introducing an 8GB iNAND embedded flash drive.
The end result should be higher and higher demand for mobile TV, which would be the exact opposite of what we’re seeing now.
