Like a bolt out of the blue, Microsoft is planning to take the wraps off Windows Mobile 6 at 3GSM.

The trade show, which begins next week in Barcelona, will see the official unveiling of what the software giant formerly code-named Crossbow, the newest update to the mobile software platform for handhelds.

Among the highlights are a smart-search function that will allow you to type in just a few letters of whatever you’re searching for—song, contact, or even email subject—and get instantly displayed search results. HTML push email and Live Instant Messaging are also expected to be a hit with users, especially those who have Exchange 2007.

Security is also a focus, as Windows Mobile 6 will be able to encrypt not only its own data but also that stored on portable memory cards. More complicated passwords are required as well.

The new OS will come in three flavors: Professional (for touch screens), Standard (for smartphones), and Classic (for PDAs).
